Henley stumbles a bit, still in contention
Such is the weekend at Oakmont in Pittsburgh that a 2-over day is pretty decent, and two such outings in three days doesn’t eliminate Sunday contention.
That’s where Russell Henley is after three rounds of the U.S. Open: a weighty 4 over par, yet still tied for 11th.
The Maconite was high on the leaderboard until some late struggles, albeit struggles not nearly as bad as some.
Henley traded strokes early with a birdie and bogey on No. 4 and 5, the birdie on a par 5. He moved into the top 5 amid reeling off 10 straight pars, which qualified as elite golf on this course on this weekend.
Then came an odd 3-putt on par 3 16, when Henley reached the green off the tee, and couldn’t quite get the 15-footer for par, missing left by about two inches.
The bogey on 18 was destiny from the start, Henley going from a rough to a bunker. His 41-yard third shot got to 14 feet, and he tapped in fro 3 inches for the bogey.
He’s in a group of 10 with Scottie Scheffler, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Max Greyserman, and Ben Griffin, among others, tied for 11th, eight shots back of leader Sam Burns.
Of the top 20 players, five are in the top 20 in the FedExCup rankings, while seven more are ranked 70th or lower, including three 100th or worse, with tied-for-sixth Thriston Lawrence starting the weekend 211th.
Henley tees off Sunday at 12:42 p.m. with Emiliaono Grillo.
