Henley survives brutal Oakmont with respectable week

Making a run became moot pretty early for Russell Henley at the U.S. Open on Sunday.

          He wasn’t alone.

The goal for Henley and about 50 or so other players was to get out of Oakmont with no figurative bruises and with some confidence.

Considering only five players started Sunday at even or better, escaping was going to be a task.

Henley escaped Oakmont tied for 10th with a 5-over 285, with Ben Griffin, each taking home $485,000.

Henley’s final round was pretty much the same for most golfers throughout the week: all over the place.

Bogeys on No. 2 and 3 dropped Henley to 6 over, and he got one back with a nice birdie on par-5 No. 4, and sat in the pack tied for 15th.

He followed a bogey on 7 with four pars and a birdie. Then, on the final six holes: bogey, birdie, par, par, birdie, bogey, pushing him over par for the day.

Henley fell from a possible top-5 finish, but not very far.

But it was quite the week.

Weather stopped play on Sunday, but the tournament pressed on, and a little improbably was completed. At 7 p.m., leader Sam Burns was 4 over for the day and even for the tournament. The only player in the field at even or better for the weekend.

At the end of the night, he was under par, thanks to a whopping tee shot on 17 that led to a birdie, and then by dropping a mind-blowing 65-footer for a birdie on 18 to clinch it.

Henley is back in action this week at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn.
