Around/About Central Georgia

No more under-the-radar for Henley, entering FedEx finale ranked high, in Ryder Cup, and getting raves from Scheffler

Three games on area high school football schedule

Four Central Georgia teams are in action early this week.

ACE Charter and Central open up GHSA Region 2-A/Division II play at Ed Defore, while Wilkinson County visits Treutlen.  Warner Robins heads northwest to take on Fayette County.

John Milledge was scheduled to play Augusta Christian as well, but that game evaporated when ACS decided to play 8-man football. JMA head coach J.T. Wall told the Milledgeville Union-Recorder it only recently became official, but he knew it was in jeopardy as ACS considering dropping down because of numbers.

It’s the opener for ACE Charter, beginning Chris Hatcher’s fourth season as head coach. He has 63 percent of the program’s wins.

The Gryphons return experience on both sides, the offense led by quarterback Ace Hatcher and all-region receiver Jaylon Davis. The defense has moved players around, but William Winters returns after an 85-tackle season.

Central lost its ninth straight season opener, technically, including a forfeit after a 12-7 win over Westside in 2020. The Chargers are on a 13-game losing streak, that started after a 34-14 win over Jordan on Oct 21, 2023.

Last week’s 51-14 loss to Dougherty did show some progress. First, it was closer than the 44-0 loss in 2024. And they’ve already scored 58.3 percent of last year’s points total.

Warner Robins is off its worst loss since falling 41-7 to Houston County in 2023, losing 45-7 to Lee County.

The Demons lost three fumbles that the Trojans turned into 16 points. Lee County ran for 256 yards and passed for 111.

Warner Robins got all its scoring in last year’s meeting with Fayette County in the first half.

Class 3A Fayette County lost 42-0 last week to Class 5A McIntosh. The Tigers went 1-9 last year and were outscored by 39 points on average. The opened with a 59-0 loss to McIntosh before losing 42-7 to Warner Robins.

The only win was a forfeit when Region 2 foe Mary Persons had to forfeit early wins. They’ve gone 1-9 three straight seasons.

Wilkinson County lost 20-12 last week to Wheeler County in a weather-shortened game. Wheeler County avenged last year’s 34-20 loss to the Warriors, who went on to a 6-5 season.
