Peach County grad Hudson Jr. gets start for FVSU, Wildcats fall in tight game
Former Peach County standout Don Hudson Jr. made his college starting debut in prime time Thursday when the Wildcats visited Clark Atlanta on ESPN2.
Hudson accounted for 261 yards of offense, but some time management issues hurt the Wildcats down the stretch in a 26-21 loss.
He followed his first incompletion of the night with a 19-yard TD pass to J.T. Pendleton to bring the Wildcats within 16-14 with 12:17 left in the third quarter.
Hudson completed the first 13 passes of his college career, including an 11-yard score to Pendleton in the first half.
Hudson was 21 of 22, then had four straight incompletions on the Wildcats’ final drive, which ended with Hudson coming up a foot short on a fourth-and-3 scramble in the final 40 seconds, turning it over on CAU’s 12.
The true freshman finished 21 of 26 for 142 yards and two scores with no interceptions, rushing for 119 yards on 23 carries, losing 22 yards.
Hudson didn’t play in the season opener.
The 0-2 Wildcats host Delta State on Sept. 20.
Birdies galore for Henley in Ryder tuneup first round
Opening a tournament with a bogey or two is nothing new for Russell Henley.
Blasting through the next 16 holes with 10 birdies? That’s a little new.
But that’s what the Stratford grad did Thursday in the first round of the Procore Championship in Napa, Cal.
The tournament is something of a tuneup for U.S. Ryder Cup players, who otherwise would have a gap of a full month from the Tour Championship to the Ryder Cup.
Henley is tied for fourth at 7 under, two back of leader Mackenzie Hughes and one back of Ryder Cup teammate Ben Griffin, and two ahead of teammate J.J. Spaun.
Henley bogeyed No. 16 and finished the day on the 7,138-hard course with another birdie.
He is tied for first in driving accuracy, sand saves, and putts per greens in regulation, third after a round in shots gained off the tee, and seventh in shots gained putting.
