Macon TD Club picks a Raider, Eagle, Patriot
Players from Northeast, Stratford, and Southwest are the latest Macon Touchdown Players of the Week.
Back: Freshman quarterback Jordan Wiggins of Northeast completed 18 of 34 passes for 313 yards and three scores, rushing fro 32 yards on five carries in the 29-0 victory over ACE.
Back: Senior running back Tyler Stephens of Stratford ran 21 times for 234 yards and five touchdowns, adding a 59-yard kickoff return to help Stratford to a 41-14 win over Brookstone.
Lineman: Senior defensive lineman Kenzell Freeman of Southwest racked up 10 tackles, eight for loss, with a sack in the Patriots’ 36-0 win over Central.
Ex-Tech assistant, well-traveled coach McCollum visiting Macon Touchdown Club
Andy McCollum, in his 43rd year of college coaching, is Monday night’s speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.
The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Admission for non-members is $30. Membership for the year is $250.
Georgia Tech assistant Brian Bohannon is next week’s speaker, followed by Maconite Chris Hatcher of Samford.
One of the more colorful and blunt members of the Touchdown Club’s speaker list, McCollum started coaching at Middle Tennessee State in 1981, nearly two decades before he’d become MTSU’s head coach, from 1999-2005.
The Marietta High and Austin Peay graduate has coached at UTEP, Baylor, N.C. State, Georgia Tech, Western Carolina, and the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, and was an analyst at Buffalo for two seasons. That’s all before his current job as head coach at Sewanee, a Division II program northwest of Chattanooga.
The Tigers have some Central Georgians on the roster: sophomore quarterback Cam Beasley of Washington County, Dublin defensive linemen Drew Rozier, Brandon Chatman, Desmond Gilbert of Dublin, offensive lineman Tate Turner of ACE Charter, and defensive lineman Juju Ashley of Westside.
The Division III Tigers are 2-1 after routing North Carolina Wesleyan 33-0 on Saturday.
