GIAA playoffs

Class 4A, Championship

Tattnall 11, Calvary Christian 5; Calvary Christian 4, Tattnall 3 (Click here for full story)

The Trojans put the top seed on its heels in the first championship game, turning a 6-5 lead after four into a runaway with 2 in the sixth and 3 in the seventh while blanking the Knights down the stretch behind Bryton Tarver.

Mercer West went 3 for 4 with 4 RBI to pace the Tattnall offense and force the winner-take-all finale.

The championship was tied at 1 after an inning, Tattnall going up 2-1 on Charli McNally’s walk and Tensley Cleghorn’s single, and then a throwing error on a fielder’s choice grounder that got an out but allowed McNally to scoot home.

Calvary tied it in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out bunt single and single, but Tattnall went right back on top in the sixth on McNally’s walk, a wild pitch, and then Cleghorn’s single to left.

Tattnall went down in order in the top of the seventh, and the Knights went off in the bottom half, with a double, single, and then two-run double to center to tie it. After a walk loaded the bases, a wild pitch ended it.

The Trojans ended the season 18-8, the Knights 25-3. Two of the losses were to Tattnall.

Class 3A, Championship

Terrell 13, John Milledge 5, 5 inn.

John Milledge may have had enough O, but D left a lot to be desired.

Six Trojan errors led to seven unearned runs and doomed John Milledge in the 3A championship game.

John Milledge outhit Terrell 11-8, but Terrell took advantage of 5 walks against only 2 strikeouts.

The bottom fell out in the bottom of the third after John Milledge took a 1-0 lead in the top half with a stunning defensive collapse. Terrell scored 5 in its half of the inning, thanks to infield errors on three straight batters, and four overall in the inning, to go with one hit and a passed ball.

John Milledge got 2 runs back in the fourth – on Emma Hudgins’ sacrifice and on a passed ball – only to give back a half-dozen runs in the bottom half on five hits, a fielder’s choice, and passed ball.

The teams traded 2-run fifth innings, Terrell ending it early in its half.

Brooklyn Baxley led JMA (12-16) with 3 hits, while Emmerson Thomas, Stella Bucholtz, and Izzy Santarone added 2 hits each, Baxley scoring twice.
