Upson-Lee boys bumped from GHSA basketball tournament
Not keeping up properly with something as simple as reporting scores properly has ended the Upson-Lee boys basketball season less than two days before the first round of the GHSA state playoffs.
It’s a tough shot for a program that less than a decade ago reeled off a staggering two-year 56-0 run and consecutive state titles.
The postseason format for some classes in GHSA sports involves a ranking system, which relies on teams simply report scores to MaxPreps on a timely basis. The GHSA’s program seeds teams based on the reported information.
Upson-Lee made the postseason – based on available and reported information – as the No. 27 seed and was ready to visit No. 6 Pickens.
The Knights record on MaxPreps – it’s the responsibility of schools to report scores each night to the website, which has no control over whether teams do or don’t do that properly – is 13-13, as of 2 a.m. Wednesday.
One of the state’s foremost basketball websites and social media accounts, www.sandysspiel.com, had the Knights listed at 15-14 entering the state tournament.
Teams in all sports have trouble properly posting scores to MaxPrep, or updating them when the schedule changes.
Once the GHSA got all of Upson-Lee’s scores, the postseason rankings equation bumped the Knights from the state playoffs.
As per MaxPreps information – again, submitted by teams, coaches, and athletics directors – this is Upson-Lee’s first time not making the state postseason since going 8-18 in 2013-14.
Hephzibah’s girls and Westside-Augusta’s boys – schools in the same AAA region Baldwin, Howard, and West Laurens – had the same stumble. Those teams remained in the 32-team playoff bracket.
Cairo, which hadn’t played since Feb. 10, replaced Upson-Lee. The changes in seeds for the other teams had a trickle-around impact on several games with teams not finding out until late Monday night that adjustments were necessary.
