Around/About Central Georgia
Central Georgia Tech teams advance
The women’s and men’s basketball teams at Central Georgia Tech are in the GCAA state tournament.
The women (19-7) are seeded second in the four-team bracket and play No. 3 Albany Tech at 8 p.m. Thursday. The final is Friday at South Georgia Tech.
The top-seeded men (23-6) beat Southern Crescent Tech 75-65 on Tuesday. The Titans host Gordon State at 6 p.m. Friday third-seed and host Gordon State in a semifinal at their gym on Anthony Road.
Henley set for Players
One notable tournament that has had Russell Henley’s number is The Players Championship.
He’ll try to get the Players’ number starting Thursday when he tees off in the morning at TPC Sawgrass and The Players Stadium in Ponte Vedra Beach.
Henley goes at 9:04 a.m. starting on No. 10.
This is Henley’s 14th Players, and he’s made the cut seven times in 13 tries. His best finish is tied for 13th in 2022, and worst is tied for 35th in 2017.
He had quite the ride in 2014, opening with a 65 and blasting an 80 two rounds later before finishing with a 66.
In his last 20 rounds at the Players, he has been under 70 only four times, including a run of three straight missed cuts.
Henley finished tied for sixth last week in the Arnold Palmer Invitational, closing with a weekend-best 68.
After winning last year’s Arnold Palmer, Henley finished tied for 30th in the Players.
GHSA basketball championships
Girls, Private: Hebron Christian 46, Holy Innocents 42
The rematch of last year’s championship this time went to Hebron Christian, whose senior class won three state titles.
And it was the 17th time head coach Jan Azar, who has coached at Mount de Sales, ended the season with a championship win.
The game MVP was Gabby Minus, who transferred to Hebron after her sophomore year at Veterans – where she set the program’s single-season scoring mark as a sophomore - only to miss most of last season with a December ACL injuryknee injury.
The Tennessee commit had seven rebounds and 13 points.
Boys, Private: Darlington 53, Holy Innocents 50
D.J. Hall went for 30 points and Darlington held off the defending state champs for its first state title in program history.
Darlington went through St. Francis, Calvary Day, and Mount Vernon before taking down Holy Innocents.
Girls, 3A: Heritage-Catoosa 65, Sandy Creek 63, OT
Two technical fouls by standout sophomore Morghan Reckley – already offered by South Carolina – twice kept the door open for Heritage, which walked through to a championship.
Sandy Creek led by 10 after three, the margin down to four when Reckley was whistled for bumping Georgia Gracy after scoring inside.
Ema Tanner made both free throws and then Gracy nailed a 3 on the ensuing possession to pull Heritage within 56-55 with 1:21 left.
Reckley’s layup after her sister Madison’s steal made it a 3-point game only for Gracy to drain a game-tying 3 with 4 seconds left.
Her second technical was also her fifth foul, after she bumped Gracy following a score that broke a 60-all tie with 2:35 left in overtime.
Heritage only got one point out of the situation, but tied it with 1:09 left. Sandy Creek had trouble getting into its offense, and trailed after a layup with 22 seconds left.
Madison Reckley got a clear look from the right side at the buzzer, but was just long.
Reckley finished with 29 points in 33 minutes on 13 of 26 shooting, with five steals, five turnovers, and five fouls.
Heritage put four in double figures, and doubled up Sandy Creek in rebounding.
Boys, 3A: Cross Creek 56, Harlem 51
The battle of Augusta went to the team that won all four battles between the Razorbacks and Bulldogs, both representing Region 4, which includes Baldwin, Howard, and West Laurens.
