Around/About Central Georgia

BSB-Shepherd, Ackerman lead Mercer in ETSU opener

Henley off to sluggish start at PGA

The day began well, with a birdie.

          It didn’t stay that way.

Russell Henley countered two birdies with four bogeys for a 2-over 72 in the first round of the PGA Championship.

That puts him in a tie for 67th, and among those worrying about the cut – top 70 players and ties – with Friday’s play. Adam Scott, Chris Gotterup, and Tommy Fleetwood are among those tied with Henley.

Henley’s strengths were inconsistent, and his best stretch of the day was five straight pars on the front nine.

He gets off to an early start with a 7:45 a.m. tee time, with Ben Kern and J.T. Poston.
