GIAA championships, Game 1

AA: Gatewood 3, Heritage 1

The defending champs had to wait awhile to take the opener, and they got off to a nice start with all they needed in the first two innings, winning despite only one hit. They patched together three walks and a hit batter for a run in the first, and then a 1-out 2-run double from Jayden Moss in the second.

Moss got the start on the hill and went 6 innings, with 6 strkeouts and a walk. Lawson Moore finished it with 3 strikeouts in the seventh. Heritage starter Thomas Strickland struck out 8 but walked 5 and hit a batter.

4A: FPD 7, Stratford 0

Brady McHugh’s double brought in Major Simmons for FPD’s first run, in the first inning, and Conner Strandmark made sure that was all the Vikings needed in their first state championship series win after losing two openers the past two years. The Vikings put it away with three straight 2-run innings, aided by a couple Stratford errors.

The Eagles went down in order only twice, in the first and sixth innings, unable to push two-out runners anywhere in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. Strandmark struck out 10 and walked 4 on 115 pitches. Hayden Camps got the loss in 4.2 innings of work.

Henley off to solid start at Charles Schwab

It had been a good while since Russell Henley had a clearly better-than-average first round.

That streak changed on Thursday when Henley knocked out a 4-under 66 at the Charles Schwab Challege in Fort Worth, Texas.

Henley is tied for 19th with a slew of players, including Hideki Matsuyama, Ludvig Aberg, and Nico Echavarria, among others. They’re only two shots back of a foursome atop the leaderboard.

It was Henley’s best round overall since a 66 in the third round of the Masters, and his top opener since the AT&T Pebble Beach in mid-February.

The Stratford grad got off to a hot start, with four birdies in the first six holes. He reeled off a run of pars before a bogey o No. 5/14, and ending the day with a birdie. He had a par and birdie on the lone two par-5s.

He found the rough on his second shot on 5/14, but got to within eight feet for par, only to leave it 19 inches from the hole for the bogey.

On the par 3 13, his tee shot died less than six feet from the cup.

Most everything that has abandoned him in the last few tournaments returned.

He tees off at 1:46 p.m. on Friday, with Justin Thomas (-1, T57) and Sungjae Im (E, T83).
