Stratford, Brentwood win GIAA state track titles

Brentwood swept Class AA GIAA state track titles, and Stratford’s girls won their second straight state championship.

          Gatewood finished second behind Brentwood.

The GIAA again has posted no specific results on its website, and only pictures with no context or identification  of teams or athletes on social media.

The association has yet to post on its website results from the state individual tennis tournament that concluded April 21, the state golf tournament that finished on April 27, nor the completed portion last week of the team tennis tournament.

The Brentwood girls won by 37 points and the boys by 5 points, according to posts by the school.

The War Eagles posted that they set state records in the girls and boys 4x100 relays, and the girls’ 4x400, as well as the 100 meter dash by Quez Collins, who also took the 200 meter title.

Brentwood got two titles from Moriah Hitchcock (100m hurdles and 300m hurdles), plus a discus title from Callie Jones.

Brentwood’s boys also got state titles from Baylor Cobb (triple jump), Jackson Bragg (discus).

It’s the eighth boys title and 13th girls championship, fourth in six years.

Kelly Grace Perrin of Stratford was the girls AAA high-point winner, according to a Stratford post, with wins – and school records – in the long jump and triple jump.

The Eagles also got titles from Hadley Stewart in the 400, and the 4x400 relay team of Mary Marshall Swift, Annie Garner, Hatsy Russell, and Stewart.

Other champions, based on schools’ social media postings or other communications:

Win Hoots of Westfield’s boys won the 100 and 200 while the Hornets won the 4x100, according to a text from Westfield coach Chad Campbell. Gatewood boys won the, 4x400 relay. Tattnall’s J’Marcus Curry won the 3A boys discus championship.

Henley stumbles a bit in final round

An inability to counter bogeys with birdies sent Russell Henley backward on the leaderboard at the Cadillac Championship.

He shot a 1-over 73 for his worst round of the weekend, dropping him 33 spots to a tie for 49th in the 72-player field with a 3-under 285.

Henley was steady through three rounds, with a 72 and two 70s, but couldn’t regain that on Sunday, with three bogeys against two birdies.

He’s likely to drop to 18th in the FedExCup rankings with this week off before the PGA Championship May 14-17 at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa.
