Former Dublin girls basketball standout Barnes dead at 39
Nicole Barnes’ basketball heart remained in Laurens County after her days as a Dublin girls basketball forward were over.
Eventually, she moved down the road to West Laurens, and was a girls basketball assistant.
Both communities are mourning the death of Barnes last Wednesday at the age of 39 after a short battle against pancreatic cancer.
“Yesterday our Family surrounded our Sweet Baby Girl with love, prayers, and positivity until she took her very last breath in her home as she requested,” her sister Tabitha posted early Thursday morning on Facebook. She fought as hard as she could to battle pancreatic cancer the last 2 months. She lost the battle but won the war, as God decided He needed her on His battlefield and Our Family respected His commands with open hearts.”
Visitation is Wednesday and Thursday from 5-7 at 312 Champion Dr. in Dublin, July 25 from 2-4 p.m. at C.D. Dudley Memorial Chapel in Dublin, with the service on July 26 at noon at the old West Laurens High in Dublin.
As of Monday night, no official obituary appears to be posted.
Barnes, who helped Dublin to the Final Four in 2005, scored more than 1,100 points as a junior and another 1,000 as a senior. Her college career started at Chattanooga State
She was the sister of Thomas and Trent Barnes, two athletic standouts at Dublin in the early part of the century, as she was.
