Henley rallies at the end of round
Golf can be baffling and confusing and crazy, even for the pros.
Ask Russell Henley.
He crammed a lot into Saturday’s third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, wit a strong finish to reach a tie for 33rd.
Through 11 holes, Henley had four birdies and a bogey to go 3 under.
Within minutes, that was wiped out.
For the second time in a month, Henley had a shot venture into “unknown” as termed by the Tour’s website and shot-by-shot feature. That shot almost went into the area for another hole.
That came on No. 12 after his 307-yard tee shot went into the left rough. His third shot found rough and fourth hit intermediate rough.
He finally made the green, 24 feet from the pin. He missed a 9-footer for the double and tapped in from 2 for the triple.
And so ended the implosion.
Henley birdied 15, 16, and 17, and parred 13, 14, and 18 to finish 3 under for the day and get into the top 40 just as leader Scottie Scheffler prepared to tee off.
His 67 tied for the fifth-best score of the day, lifting him 12 spots on the leaderboard at 2-under for the weekend, 11 shots behind leader Scheffler but four shots behind the trio of Tom Kim, Kurt Kitayama, and Viktor Hovland tied for 10th.
He’s likely to make a run toward such a finish. Henley ranks fifth on the tour in final round scoring average. Two players ahead of him that stat are ahead of him in the tournament (Jake Knapp and Scheffler).
