Henley carries some unpredictability into Tour Championship

Reaching the final 30 of the FedExCup rankings and the final playoff tournament hasn’t been in doubt all season for Russell Henley.

How he’ll play is another matter.

Henley’s game has been inconsistent this season, yet he’s battled through issues off the tee for some respectable finishes to maintain his rankings.

Thus, he’s No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking and No. 14 in the FedEx rankings entering the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.

Henley tees off at 12:42 p.m. Thursday with Jacob Bridgeman.

The last two months haven’t been overly consistent for Henley, whose finishes have ranged from a tie for 65th to a tie for ninth.

A year ago, Henley competed in five tournaments from the U.S. Open in mid-July through the BMW, and averaged a 10th-place finish.

This year, he competed in six, adding the rocket Classic. But in those same five tournaments, henley’s 2026 average finish is 25.6.

In the Rocket Classic in early August, Henley had his second-best score (270) but fourth-best finish.

Last year, Henley’s 5-over 285 was good for a tie for 10th in the U.S. Open. This year, he was 14 over to tie for 65th, a third-round 80 followed by a final-round 71.

Henley still leads the Tour in driving accuracy, but that gap has closed amid a run of inconsistency. He was tied for 31st at last week’s BMW, yet managed a 12th-place finish. At the Rocket Classic, he was tied for 20th en route to a tie for 20th finish.

Still, he should have some confidence this week, since East Lake has been kind to him. He’s only made the Tour Championship – in the Tour’s current format – the last four years. And in the three previous events, he’s finished tied for 14th, tied for fourth, and tied for second, an aggregate 43 shots under par.

Even back in 2014 and 2017, Henley was hot at East Lake, finishing tied for second and tied for third. His worst round in 20 is 72, only twice.
