Georgia College mourns loss of soccer player to cancer

Services will be held Friday for Georgia College women’s soccer player Isabella “Izzy” Sause, who died on Aug. 30 after a battle with skin cancer.

A memorial service is Friday at 5 p.m. at Graystone Church in Loganville.

The Loganville High graduate was a four-year varsity starter and four-year member of the principal’s list. She was a sophomore on the nursing track at Georgia College who played in two games as a freshman.

Her sister Savannah is a junior on the soccer team.

She was diagnosed in the spring of 2024 with a melanoma – not common for somebody her age - which then spread to her lymph nodes, and further.

From her obituary: “She was friends with all different kinds of people She was always the glue that could put different people in the room, and everyone would suddenly get along.

“All it took was her smile and laugh and it was so intoxicating, no one could think of anything else.”

A story noted how a simple visit to a dermatologist because of a mole on her chest brought devastating news to somebody who “was everybody’s friend.”

As of Wednesday evening, a GoFundMe page started in 2025 has raised more than $75,000 of a $100,000 goal. Donations will now go to melanoma awareness groups.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for contributions to the Claire Marie Foundation, which focuses on treatment and research for adolescent and young-adult melanoma.

Northeast welcomes Jackson in region opener

The first meeting between Northeast and Jackson since 2001 is the Region 2-3A opener for both teams, Thursday at 7 at Thompson Stadium.

They played in 2000 and 2001 and split, Jackson winning 35-8 and Northeast winning 14-7.

Jackson has had 12 winning seasons since then, but not since 2019. The Red Devils won five region titles in that span, the last one coming in 2015.

Northeast has 15 winning seasons since that last meeting, and two region championships.

The Raiders are 2-1 and coming off a big 58-40 win over 5A Perry, while Jackson is 1-2 and had the week off after hammering 5A Union Grove 70-27.

GMC Prep racks up win in makeup game

Tuesday night was a good night of football for GMC Prep.

The Bulldogs popped Atkinson County 36-21 on Tuesday in a game made up from the first week of the season.

That game was postponed because of a school threat in Atkinson County.

GMC improved to 3-1 and is off to its best start since 2021 and second 3-1 mark since 2019 (which included a forfeit win over Hancock Central(. The Bulldogs are off before visiting Jenkins County.

Alumni Update

Northside grad Purvis entering Georgia Southern Hall of Fame

The most successful and decorated pitcher in Georgia Southern softball history is part of the school’s newest class of Hall of Fame inductees, and is a Northside grad.

Sarah Purvis Bryant graduated from Northside in 2011, and embarked on an epic GSU softball career.

The class will be inducted during the weekend of Sept. 25-26 when Houston visits Paulson Stadium. This group brings to 184 the number of Hall of Famers.

She joins Matt Breida (football), Scott Henley (baseball), Marlo Mincey-Vinson (women’s track, also former Fort Valley State women’s track coach), Brent Russell (football), Frank Hook and Roger Inman (longtime GSU athletics staff members covering 40 and 50 years), and the “Dirty Dozen” (group of instrumental supporters).

From the school’s release on Purvis Bryant:

“The most decorated pitcher in program history is a three-time SoCon Pitcher of the Year and three-time NFCA All-Region selection who guided the Eagles to two SoCon regular season titles and tournament championships in 2013 and 2014

She was named the 2012 SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player, and is a three-time SoCon All-Tournament team member.

“The all-time career leader in wins (61), strikeouts (770), and shutouts (25) holds the single-season pitching records for complete games (28), shutouts (10), wins (23), strikeouts (288), consecutive scoreless innings (37.0) and consecutive victories (7). She tossed the program's three perfect games, including one during the NCAA Tournament against Hampton on May 18, 2013, and pitched three no-hitters, the most in program history, and holds a 1.85 ERA, the second best in program history, over 676.1 innings pitched.”
