The third day of the National Junior College Athletic Association’s national golf tournament wasn’t quite as pleasant for GMC as the first two.

After taking sole possession of first with a 15-stroke improvement, the Bulldogs fell into a tie for second with a 21-stroke digression and dropped 15 strokes back.

GMC is the defending national champion, and now trails Vincennes University CC 930-945. Sandhill (N.C.) is tied with GMC, four strokes ahead of Minnesota State Community and Tech, the only other team in legitimate contention.

Vincennes has improved each day, from 318 to 307 to 305.

John James was the only Bulldog to crack 80 a day after everybody cracked 80. Trey May dropped from contention to a tie for ninth with an 82 after a pair of 75s. He is eight strokes behind Dan Lapp of Tompkins (N.Y.).

The Bulldogs will need to at least match last year’s final round, when they shot a 299. But GMC also had the lead going into the final round.

The last group tees off at 10:44 a.m. Thursday.
