Mercer adds former Alabama, Georgia assistant to hoops staff

Phillip Pearson brings some major experience to town as he joins the Mercer men’s basketball staff.

Pearson replaces Dale Layer, who joined the Mercer staff 14 months ago and left last week to become special assistant to the head coach at Virginia Tech. This will be the third time Layer as worked with Hokies head coach Buzz Williams.

Pearson is the second newcomer of the summer. Elvis Kisonas was named in early June as the new director of basketball operations, replacing Josh Davis, who departed after 11 months for Oklahoma Baptist and the staff of former Mercer assistant Jason Eaker, who took the job in early April.
