Fort Valley State announces a new football coach

Just less than six weeks after Kevin Porter became the latest Fort Valley State head coach to be fired with a winning record, the Wildcats have their sixth head coach since the turn of the century.

Maurice Flowers brings a broad HBCU resume that includes Fayetteville State, Miles, Mississippi Valley State, and Shaw, as well as Johnson C. Smith. He was also head coach at Chester High in South Carolina for two years and West Charlotte High for a year, serving as an assistant at other high schools in North Carolina and Texas.

His career has been on the offensive side of the ball, as coordinator at MVSU, FSU, Miles, and Shaw.

Flowers is from South Bend, Ind., and graduated from East Mecklenburg High in Charlotte – earning all-conference football and basketball honors – and  Johnson C. Smith.

The school will hold a press conference on Jan. 10, eight days after he starts at the school.
