Braves Report
The first inning? It took Max Fried 38 pitches to get done, and the near-capacity crowd just settling in might’ve got the feeling it wouldn’t hang around for all nine innings.
Fried gutted out the second after consecutive singles to start, and then the third. Stunningly, Fried left with only a 3-1 deficit, and the Braves still very much alive.
Rafael Ortega turned that wretched first into a distant memory with a sixth-inning grand slam to lead Atlanta to a 5-3 win and the series over Los Angeles.
The Dodgers left Atlanta 82-44, with the Braves at 74-52 after taking two of three.
Fried ended up with tolerable, if not shocking considering-the-first numbers: five innings, eight hits, three runs three walks, and eight strikeouts. And he gave up LA’s lone homer of the game, a rare one-bomb game lately for the Dodgers.
Fried was inches from a homer to lead off the third, settling for a double only to be stranded at third.
Matt Joyce and newcomer Adeiny Hechavarria each had two hits for the Braves.
Ronald Acuna had a hit in the third and was thrown out stealing second, and then was pulled an inning later for not hustling on the play.
