Former Northeast basketball player arrested, charged with three counts of aggravated assault

A former basketball player at Northeast was arrested last week and charged for a late July shooting.

According to a Bibb County Sheriff's new release on Monday, Camerone Lane Cherry was at a home on Thomas Drive in East Macon off of Shurling Drive and arguing with 19-year-old Lorenzo Davis.

Davis' mother instructed Cherry to leave, and he responded by pulling a gun and firing several shots before leaving. A neighbor told police that some bullets struck her house.

Investigators took over, and eventually met with Cherry at their office, and based on witness statements, was then arrested on three counts of aggravated assault and booked on Aug. 22, according to records. The incident happened on July 29.

No one was injured, and Cherry is being held without bond.

Cherry was a junior on Northeast's playoff boys basketball team in 2018-19, and was a first-team All-Region 3-AA selection, after two second-team selections. He was expected to be one of the top players in Central Georgia this season. He is not currently enrolled at Northeast, according to a district spokesperson.
