Mercer 45, Presbyterian 7
For a team that was supposed to be off on Saturday, Mercer was very much on, Tucker Cannon setting a school record for single-game receiving yards as Mercer racked up 368 passing yards and 180 on the ground.
And the defense held Presbyterian to 2.9 yards per rush and a long play of 23 yards.
Mercer was scheduled to be off, and Hurricane Dorian forced Presbyterian to cancel its opener against Stetson last week. Both teams were off, so they agreed to play.
The Bears were up 21-0 in less than 10 minutes, and had a shutout until the 6:04 mark of the fourth quarter.
Robert Riddle was 18 of 27 for 325 yards and three touchdowns, but two interceptions. Cannon caught seven of those passes for 144 yards.
Rob Lake’s 98-yard touchdown reception became the longest offensive play in Mercer history.
Washington County grad Will Coneway led the stellar defensive effort with eight tackles and a pass breakup.
Miles 38, FVSU 17
There stood the Wildcats, entering the fourth quarter tied at 17 with Miles in FVSU’s season and home opener.
The tie was broken 27 seconds into the fourth quarter, the margin grew by another touchdown four minutes later, and Miles sealed with a touchdown at the 1:53 mark for a 38-17 win over the Wildcats.
Miles outgained FVSU 360-268 on four more plays, and held the Wildcats to only 12 rushing yards. FVSU had 42 negative yards. Miles racked up seven sacks for 38 yards in losses to three for 16 for FVSU.
GMC 26, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 0
The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 with the home win, avenging last year’ 14-10 road loss. GMC’s final score came with 5:28 left in the third.
It was their last game in Milledgeville until Oct. 19, with three road games and a neutral-site game at Fort Benning.
Georgia 63, Murray State 17
The suspense soon became wondering who in uniform wouldn’t play, as Georgia started off slow and then pummeled the Racers as scores of players saw action in the rout.
Jake Fromm played barely a half and completed 10 of 11 passes on the day Vince Dooley’s name was added to the stadium, in front of scores of former Bulldog players.

Georgia Tech 14, South Florida 10
It wasn’t pretty, and South Florida wasn’t Clemson, but Georgia Tech defended the home turf and gave Geoff Collins his first win as the Jackets’ head coach.
Northside grad Tobias Oliver made his debut as a kick returner, and played some wideout as well as quarterback. He’s 20 yards from 1,000 for his career.
Georgia State 48, Furman 42
The hosts trailed by 17 early in the second quarter, and then the hosts forged ahead and held on in a game of 419 yards rushing, fairly split, and 673 passing yards.
Georgia State’s Dan Ellington passed for 362 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions on a 29-for-37 day, and he led GSU with 86 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Kent State 26, Kennesaw State 23 (OT)
Matthew Trickett tied the game with a field goal in the final seconds, and then drilled the game-winner in the first overtime as Kent State’s defense held the Owls out.
An Owl fumble set up the game-tying field goal with 10 seconds left, and an Owl fumble killed the visitors in overtime, Kennesaw State losingit on a second and 10 on the 13.
The defense almost nullified the turnover, putting Kent State into a fourth-and-11 hole to force the field goal try, which was good from 43 yards.
Kennesaw State left potential points all over the field, with two touchdowns nullified by flags, and giving up a pick in the end zone. The Owls trailed in regulation only from the 9:26 mark of the third quarter to the 1:47 mark of the fourth, leading or being tied the rest of the time.

Georgia Southern 26, Maine 18
Despite not having its starting quarterback in uniform, Georgia Southern ran for 395 yards and survived some sloppiness.
The Eagles weren’t overly sharp, fumbling seven times and converting only three third downs against the No. 6 team in FCS.
