Around/About Central Georgia

Henley closes strong for a top-10 finish

The final round was the best round for Russell Henley, who shot a 67 on Sunday to finish in a tie for seventh at the Workday Charity Open in Dublin, Ohio.

Henley had a quality weekend, with three straight 70s before Sunday’s round that left him 11 under. Two bogeys were countered by seven birdies, five on the back nine.

Henley has shot 70 or better in eight of his last nine rounds since golf returned. He had cracked 70 in seven of eight rounds before the season was stopped.

It was Henley’s second top-10 finish of the entire season, and best since finishing second in the John Deere Classic a year ago.

Collin Morikoawa stunned Justin Thomas in a playoff.

GC’s Mancilla fourth at GSGA amateur

Only five strokes separated the top eight players in the Georgia State Golfers Association state am, and Georgia College’s Austin Mancilla was one.

He shot a 72 on Sunday for a three-round 216, good for sole possession of fourth.

Georgia Tech alum Luke Schniederjans beat Brett Barron in a playoff to win, each shooting a 213.

FPD grad Wilson Andress finished tied for 16th, with a 221, one stroke ahead of Houston County grad Brent Hamm.

Daniel Davis of Georgia College tied for 45th at 228, and Taylor Smith tied for 55th with a 230.

Offense shows up in Bacon intersquad game

Austin Deming and Trevor Austin each had three hits and two RBI to lead the Macon Eggs to a 12-5 win Sunday over the Macon Bacon.

Robert Brooks had no hits for the Eggs, but scored three times, as did Carson Crowe on one hit. Will Olson had two hits and three RBI for the Bacon.

Pitching staffs combined for 19 strikeouts and 14 walks, allowing only one homer, by Olson.

Macon hosts Savannah on Tuesday.
