Around/About Central Georgia

Henley in the hunt at Wyndham

Most days, a 63 is mighty, mighty good, but it was only pretty good Saturday at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C.

Still, that round has Russell Henley in contention in a group tied for 14th, seven strokes out of the lead.

Henley’s 63 has him 11 under at 199 through three rounds, and in a group with former Georgia teammate Harris English. The Maconite happily turned in the rare bogey-free round, with seven birdies.

It was Henley’s best round of the season by a stroke, and best since a fourth-round 61 at last year’s John Deere Classic, when he finished second with a 19-under 265.

Last year, Henley shot a 12-under 268 here to tie for 31st.

He is scheduled, weather permitting, to tee off at 1 p.m, with Jason Kokrak.

Si Woo Kim is holding on to a two-shot lead over Rob Oppenheim and Doc Redman, with all three shooting a 63 or 62 on Saturday.

Macon in “Southern Summer Ball Series Championship” Sunday

Macon hosts Savannah in the Coastal Plain League’s version of a championship Sunday night.

Granted, the finalists are made up of two teams out of three who played league games all season, so it’s been fairly inevitable for weeks. Lexington County is the third team.

Savannah is 16-14, Macon 13-13, and Lexington County 8-10, according to late-Saturday CPL website standings.

Savannah leads Macon in this season’s series 13-7, having won four of the last five meetings. Only six meetings have been decided by three runs or less.

The league website indicates this is the final game of the season, but the Bacon’s website indicates nine more games with Savannah, on the next three Thursday-Friday-Saturday weekends

Weather and field conditions took care of Saturday’s intersquad exhibition.
