HS FB roundup: High seeds Stratford, FPD, John Milledge, Westfield, Brentwood win by average of 39.6 points in GIAA second round

1. Stratford 37, 9. Calvary Christian 21 (Click here for full story)
The Eagles reached the 9-win mark for the third time since 2020 and under the third head coach since then with their second win over Calvary Christian in less than a month. Maddox Whitehead got Stratford on the board early with a safety, Ja’Lon Smith powering in from short yardage three minutes later for a 9-0 lead halfway through the first quarter. Quarterback Tucker Johnston turned in a dazzling 24-yard touchdown through traffic early in the second, then rolled left and threw a strike to Joshua Butts in the end zone for a 23-0 lead with 5:14 left in the second quarter. Johnston and Jett Johnston connected on a 6-yard score with 63 seconds left, Calvary Christian scoring to end the half.

After a game-opening three and out, FPD (8-3) scored on its next to possessions and kept the foot on the gas to roll over Strong Rock, eliminating the Patriots (6-5) for the third straight year and taking a 6-1 lead in the series. Freshman QB Cash Walker was money in his third straight start in place of injured Major Simmons, completed a sizzling 17 of 19 for 161 yards and two touchdowns, again keeping the Vikings out of bad plays and avoiding turnovers and ill-advised passes. Brady McHugh has been among the injured Vikings, but was health en route to 93 rushing yards and two scores plus a receiving touchdown. FPD earned a running clock late in the third quarter on a night in which the Vikings paid tribute on the final home game of public address announcer King Kemper after 30 years at the mic.

Class AAA
1. John Milledge 56, Piedmont 0 (Click here for full story)
Piedmont (7-5) was held to eight rushing and 35 passing yards in the Cougars’ worst loss since 54-0 to Robert Toombs late in the 2018 season. And it’s JMA’s biggest win since 55-0 over Pinewood Christian in the middle of the 2022 season. Asa Wall scored on a 4-yard run and 22-yard pass from Lewis Cheney, while Duke Hurt got a 1-yard and 23-yard touchdown run. Cheney added touchdown passé to Bradyn Harrison and Bryce McDonel, covering 21 and 41 yads. Cohen Brooks and Gus Cumming added scores for the 10-1 Trojans, who racked up 446 yards in total offense. Hurts cruised to 153 yards on the ground and Cheney covered 142 yards in the air.

3. Westfield 42, 6. Tiftarea 6 (Click here for full story)
The homestanding Hornets (8-3) made sure there would be no rerun of the first meeting, a 20-19 Tiftarea win in mid September. It was Westfield’s second 40-point game of the year, the first coming in the opener, 44-0 over Brookwood. Friday was also Westfield’s second-biggest margin of victory this season.

1. Brentwood 49, 8. Windsor 21 (Click here for video report)
The defending champs (10-1) charged out to a 35-0 lead after one, starting with Baylor Cobb’s 33-yard TD pass to Tristan Robinson, their first connection of the night. Robinson went in from the 13 for a two-score lead midway through the first, Cobb going 65 yards for a touchdown a few minutes later right after a punt. Cobb hit Quez Collins for a 30-yard score and Robinson added a 7-yard run, both in the final four minutes of the first quarter. Windsor (5-7) broke the shutout with a minute left in the half for a 49-7 halftime deficit.

4. Briarwood 51, 5. Trinity Christian 9
The teams were tied two minutes into the game, but Briarwood (8-3) then took off, scoring three second-quarter touchdowns to take control. They put up 24 points in the fourth quarter to make it a rout. It was a season high in points allowed by TCS (5-6).
3. Southland 20, 6. Central Fellowship 12
CFCA led 6-0 after one on Judson Walls’ short run late in the quarter, but Southland scored twice in a short time in the final minutes of the second quarter for a 13-6 halftime lead. The Raiders (7-4) went up by two scores midway through the third quarter before the Lancers (5-6) got another score from Walls early in the fourth to get back within a score. Southland sealed it with an interception in the final three minutes.

The Gators finish 4-8.
