Class AAA
5. No. 9 Jenkins, 11-1, at 4. No. 8 West Laurens, 12-0
Neither team is all that accustomed to being in this spot or with these records, although the Warriros reached the quarterfinals in 2023 when they went 5-8. The past two seasons, Jenkins is 20-4 and West Laurens 20-3. Jenkins has scored 1,022 points in 24 games and West Laurens 844 in 23. The Raiders have surrendered 408 and the Warriors 446. Jenkins has played only two teams ranked by the AJC in the past two seasons, both this year, going 1-1. West Laurens is 2-0 in two seasons. This may be a wild game of mistakes and huge plays. West Laurens’ Ethan Cason Gutyon has a team-high 10 sacks and 13 tackles for loss, and Jayce Blash has 5 interceptions. The Raiders will have to put pressure on QB Demetrius Holloway (74-119-5/18, 1,540 yards) and cover well, while maintaining composure of the Warriors slow down the West Laurens run game.

Class A/Division I
5. No. 4 Northeast, 10-2, at 4. No. 2 Toombs County, 11-1

The only thing about a rematch is that it’s a rematch. The teams are different than as of a little more than a year ago. Toombs County had to replace a 2,500-yard passer at quarterback who had 32 touchdowns and 9 interceptions and ran for 613, plus a leading rusher with 1,125 yards, and a leading receiver with 798 yards and 14 touchdowns. Northeast had to replace a 2,000-yard rusher, and assorted defenders. And both teams have done very well with new starters, although Northeast went from run first to pass first. But the quarterback who led the Raiders to the finale is back at quarterback after most of the season at ‘do whatever is necessary.’ Northeast has to avoid dumb penalties that have nothing to do with effort, and get a run game going. The Raiders will have a quality home environment to deal with, but Northeast the past three seasons had won at Dodge County, Washington County, Fanning County, and Fitzgerald.
