GHSA state tennis tournament postponed

Weather in North Georgia has forced the GHSA state tennis tournament to be pushed to next week, and from one location to throughout the state.

The semifinals and finals were set for the Rome Tennis Center on Saturday.

Now, the semifinals will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday at the highest-seeded schools. The finals will be played on May 17 or 19th the the highest-seeded school.

ACE Charter, the seventh seed, travels to Region 2-A/Division II rival Bleckley County, seeded third, in a semifinal. No. 5 Model is at No. 1 Brantley County in the other semifinal.

And Taylor County’s boys, the Region 6-A/Division II champ, will host Lake Oconee Academy. Screven County is at Early County in the other semifinal.

It’s not been announced, but a coin flip is likely to determine the championship host in A/II, since all four teams are region champs.

There are no girls teams from Central Georgia left.

Henley drops from list of contenders

There was no repeat of Thursday’s smooth first round for Russell Henley at the Truist Championship in Philadelphia.

The Stratford grad followed a solid bogey-free opening round with a four-bogey second round that included a double bogey for a 4-over day.

That dropped him 44 spots into a tie for 55th at 1 under, 11 back of leader Keith Mitchell.

Henley and Corey Conners are the only top-10 golfers in the bottom half of the 72-player field, Conner tied for 43rd.

Justin Rose, ranked 12th and 14th, is last after a 7-over second round. There is no cut.

Henley is paired with Viktor Hovland for a 9:35 a.m. tee time on Saturday.

Signings

Southwest’s Brandon Ashley is headed to Columbus State for men’s basketball, Tyshawn Brantley to Gordon State.

Dodge County’s Lyric Green officially signed with Central Georgia State for women’s basketball, as did Jordan Jenkins for football.

Westside’s Jatavin Zellner signed to play men’s basketball at Pfeiffer, and Destiny Spencer to East Georgia State for women’s basketball.
