Upstart Newnan handles Houston County for championship
Houston County has its share of run-rule finishes and wins over the years.
The Bears don’t much know about the other side, but they got a reminder the hard way when Newnan exploded in the third and fourth innings for an 11-1 win Monday over Houston County in five innings to clinch the GHSA Class 5A state title.
Newnan won the opener 3-1.
The 11 runs in the second game was the highest total given up by Houston County since an 11-3 loss to Thomas County Central in March of 2024, followed two weeks later by a 17-2 loss to Houston of Germantown, Tenn.
Newnan sent seven men to the plate in the three-run third inning, and then more than doubled it with seven in the fourth. Six of the runs came with two outs, and were aided by a passed ball, hit batter, and two bases-loaded walks.
Houston County gave up seven runs or more in only three games this year.
The Bears tried to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth to not get mercy-ruled. Vick Gann’s two-out dribbler only a few feet in front of the plate all but stopped, barely fair, and the throw from catcher Reid Davis sailed over the head of first baseman Caden Truitt into the outfield, Gann chugging easily into third.
But Gann was called out during the play for runner’s interference, ending the game.
It was an unexpected nightcap, after Newnan won the opener 3-1, taking a 2-0 lead in the third and then keeping the Bears from rallying after it became a 3-1 game in the fourth.
Houston County stranded a runner in each of the final four innings, wasting leadoff hits in the sixth and seventh.
Isaiah Galason had a solo homer in the opener. Tyson Ganas with 2 of Houston County’s 7 hits. Kendall Jackson had half of the Bears’ 4 hits in the nightcap.
