Henley regroups, in a big way
He didn’t have the most clutch day, by any stretch.
After all, Justin Rose exploded 50 spots, and Sam Burns moved up 45 spots, among others.
But Russell Henley erased the suspense early on whether he’d be sweating out another cut, reeling off a slew of early birdies en route to a 4-under second round of the Memorial in Ohio.
The Stratford grad jumped 23 spots and into the top 10, into a tie for eighth with Tom Hoge, Xander Schauffele, and Collin Morikawa.
The first sign of a different day came early, when he drained a 40-footer on No. 3 for his first birdie of the day, one of the longest shots he’s hit in a long time.
After a birdie putt lipped out on , he cruised to another one on the par-5 No. 5, and did the same on another par 5 two holes later, his mid-range game on point.
Then he dropped a 21-footer for birdie on No. 8, and was 6-under through nine. A streak of five pars followed, coming with a foot and a half and a foot of birdies along the way.
His only hiccup came two holes of a birdie on No. 15, giving him three birdies and a par on the four par 5s. He got into the rough on his second shot on 17, and almost saved par.
