East controls Coastal Plain League skills contests
The West may have been put on alert Sunday for Monday night’s Coastal Plain League’s All-Star game at Luther Williams Field.
Three of the four titles from Sunday’s skills competition went to players from the East.
Boone’s Michael Young was the lone winner from the West, taking the catcher accuracy competition, over Wilson’s Chase Waddell, Holly Springs’ Andrew Keller, and Asheboro’s Seojun Oh.
The fastest man in the league is Peninsula’s Kazuya Jordan, who ran 7.22 in the championship round to beat Lexington County’s Brandon Gibbs (7.56)
The most accurate outfielder arm belongs to Charlie Bussey of Wilson who topped Hayden Friese of Martinsville in the “frozen ropes” contest.
Macon’s Billy Ham reached the championship round of the home run derby, but the night belonged to Evan Bouldin of Tri-City, who won 6-0 in the finals, after belting nine in the first two rounds. Ham hammered nine in the second round to advance.
Gates open at 6 p.m. on Monday for the all-star game, which includes Ham and Macon teammate Kai Decker (Houston County/Mercer). First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
