Alumni Update

Bleckley County to retire Mims’ jersey on Friday

He now plays about a 12-hour drive from home, but Bleckley County and Cochran won’t forget Amarius Mims for a long time.

The Bleckley County star will be honored Friday night with the retirement of his No. 65 jersey. The ceremony will take place afer the first quarter of the Royals’ game against East Laurens.

The Royals are 1-1 after falling 31-29 last week to rival Dodge County.

Mims was an elite prospect at Bleckley, a huge 6-foot-7, 320-pounder in high school, playing in the 2021 Under Armour All-American game and earning high school All-America honors, to go with all-region and all-state selections.

The Royals went 15-9 in his final two seasons, reaching the AA quarterfinals his senior year.

He picked Georgia over Tennessee and Alabama, among others, and played in 29 games over three seasons with the Bulldogs. An ankle injury limited him in his final year, but he was still picked 18th by Cincnnati in 2024..

The son of Nikki Mims and Prentice Purnell turns 23 in October.

Around/About Central Georgia

Services Friday for longtime Central Georgia coach Gordon

Bobby Gordon covered plenty in his coaching career.

He covered four high schools – Southwest, Southeast, Rutland, and Northside – and five sports – football, wrestling, golf, track, and swimming – during  a 25-year career.

The 1967 Northside grad died on Aug. 22. A mass will be held Friday at noon at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with visitation an hour beforehand at the church. A private service at Glen Haven Memorial Garden will be held later.

Gordon managed the Macon Club in the 1980s before getting into coaching.

His final coaching job was at Northside under legendary Conrad Nix.

The 77-year-old is survived by his wife of 41 years, Miona, two children, several grandchildren, and two siblings.

More Thursday night action in Central Georgia

Central Georgia fields are home to a pair of high school football games on Thursday.

Rutland and Howard play at Thompson Stadium while Veterans welcomes Starr’s Mill to Freedom Field. Taylor County visits Wheeler County in a makeup.

The Hurricanes and Huskies have met 10 times in a series of streaks. Rutland won the first four meetings, from 2010-2013, the Huskies winning the six meetings since then, including 31-12 last year.

Both teams are 0-1, Rutland’s game Friday with Jeff Davis pushed to Oct. 17 because of weather.

Rutland’s Tyson White completed only 5 passes in the opening loss to Bleckley County, but for 129 yards. The Hurricanes ran for 178 yards, but were held out of the end zone.

Howard let chances slip away and  lost 41-34 to Westside two weeks ago. The Huskies have no stats posted on MaxPreps.

Veterans (1-1) lost 35-27 last year, and 38-17 in the first meeting, in 2016 in the first round of the playoffs.

Both teams are led by first-year head coaches, Steve DeVoursney at Veterans and David Cooper at Starr’s Mill, which went 10-2 last year and lost 53-35 to Cartersville in the second round of the playoffs.

Neither team has posted any stats to MaxPreps.

Taylor County and Wheeler County apparently decided on Monday to play on Thursday.

Wheeler County beat Wilkinson County 20-12 in the opener, while Taylor County lost 34-24.Wheeler County won 15-0 last year to go to 2-1 in the series. The first two games were played in 1974-75.
