Henley set for first FedEx Cup playoff tournament
Russell Henley will be among those rested, confident and with momentum as the PGA Tour’s playoffs get going this week at the FedEx St.Jude Championship in Memphis.
Henley is fourth in the FedExCup rankings and fifth in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Henley tees off at 10:45 a.m. Thursday with Justin Thomas, and they’re a featured group.
The FedEx St. Jude Championship is this week, followed by the BMW Championship in Owings Mill, Md., and then the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.
The playoffs started in 2007, six years before Henley joined the Pro Tour.
He’ll not be sneaking up on anybody, as per Patrick McDonald of CBSSports.com:
“Pick to win FedEx Cup -- Russell Henley (22-1): Henley enters the playoffs inside the top five in the season-long race and is assured of a tee time at the Tour Championship. He finished in 3rd last season at a restored East Lake and will arrive this year in the best form of his career.
“The reliable right hander continues to contend (and win) in big-time events like major championships and signature events, so it is not a stretch to suggest he can do so again in a limited field.”
The Stratford grad has some solid momentum, with four straight top-10 finishes since missing the PGA Championship cut. He tied for 10th in the U.S. Open and the British Open, tied for fifth in the Memorial, and tied for second at the Travelers.
And that stretch has included an almost dizzying diversity of courses and challenges.
This is the fourth year that the FedEx St. Jude Championship has been part of of the playoff.
Henley has been competitive in the FedEx at Memphis, even when he missed the cut in 2022 after shooting a 1-under 139.
He finished tied for sixth a year later with three 67s and a 68, and followed that with a tie for 30th after three sub-69 rounds and a 73.
But in seven trips to TPC Southwind, including the old St. Jude Classic, is 4-3 in made/missed cuts, with all four finishes 30th or better.
A year ago, he was 13th and 14th in the rankings and had made nine straight cuts, and was in contention until a 73 on Saturday before making it a little interesting with a 66 on Sunday.
In 15 events this year, Henley has nine top-10 finishes and and missed only two cuts. He has shot 70 or better in 35 of 56 rounds, 62.5 percent of the time.
He is in the top 20 in tour players in shots gained total and tee to green as well as approach and around the green, driving accuracy, greens in regulation, putting from 20-25 feet, and par 3 average, among others.
Lineups.com points out that Henley is one of only five players ranking above average in shots gained/par 4 and tee to green, birdies gained, par 4s of 450-500 yards, shots gained BS and approach, bogeys avoided, and double bogeys avoided.
His 61 at the Travelers tied for the fourth-lowest round on tour this year.
In last year’s three playoff tournaments, Henley finished tied for 22nd, tied for fourth, and tied for 19th.
