Quality back nine puts Henley in contention
Russell Henley had a rare round, but pretty normal, too.
The rarity: he opened the first round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship with a birdie, and ended it with a birdie.
He was solid in the middle and finished the first round of the PGA Tour’s first playoff tournament tied for seventh with a 4-under 66.
That left him four shots back of leader Akshay Bhatia, in a pack with Maverick McNealy, Ben Griffin, Rickie Fowler, and Collin Morikawa.
Henley started off birdie-bogey-birdie, good enough for the top 10, but dropped a little with a bogey on No. 5 as more players teed off.
He was even through nine holes. Henley opened the back nine with a birdie, and repeated the feat on Nos. 13, 16, and 18, including a pair of par 5s.
Henley hit 14 fairways, finding two roughs and two intermediates off the tee, and converting them into two birdies, a par and bogey, tying him for fifth among the field in driving accuracy.
He tied for seventh in shots gained, and was 10th in shots gained approach to green.
Henley and Justin Thomas tee off at 1:45 p.m. Friday.
Macon RBI softball alum gets scholarship
Franchesca Divert, who played softball in the Macon RBI program, has received a $20,000 college scholarship from Major League Baseball as part of its RBI program.
She is one of 12 recipients from nearly 350 RBI programs across the nation.
Divert graduated fin May with honors from ACE Charter where she played basketball and competed in track, but was not on the softball roster.
She is the second Macon player to earn a scholarship. Sasha Norman, a Central grad, was awarded one in 2016. Divert will attend Georgia Southwestner and study nursing.
Macon RBI added $250 to her scholarship total.
