Huge showdown at Thompson with Dublin, Northeast; Peach County at Westover

The round-robin playoff-type schedule that is GHSA Region 2-A/Division II has another showdown Thursday when co-leaders Dublin (4-1/4-0) visits Northeast (4-1/4-0).
The teams play at 7 p.m. at Thompson Stadium.
That’s the site of the last time Dublin lost to any team from Bibb County, the Raiders eking out a 21-20 win on Oct. 20, 2017. So began a 10-game winning streak for Dublin against Bibb County, and Northeast, Southwest, Central, ACE Charter, and Tattnall.
Average score: 50-9. The closest game in that stretch came last year when Northeast clawed its way to stay close in a 17-7 loss, letting slip some fourth-quarter red-zone chancs.
Dublin outrushed Northeast 300-135 year, the Raiders taking a 61-15 passing advantage. But Northeast brings a passing game as impactful as its running game last year, and a more balanced offensive attack.
Northeast freshman quarterback Jordan Wiggins has completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 1,051 yards, 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Former QB Reginald Glover is the top target with 22 catches for 283 yards, although a third of T Tinsley’s 14 catches have been for touchdowns.
Dublin has three main rushers with at least 29 carries getting between 8.3 and 9.6 yards a carry, and combining for 14 rushing touchdowns. Junior Trav Bostic leads with 92.4 yards a game and 5 touchdowns.
The Irish have a total of 184 yards passing, about 87 percent of Northeast’s average per game.
Another defensive game wouldn’t be a shock. Dublin has four defenders with at least 4.3 tackles a game, and Northeast’s Kortnei Williams is again among the state leaders in interceptions, though his run support will be more important against Dublin’s legendary wing-T. Tailen Sampson gets 11.3 stops a game.
Northeast is ranked No. 6 and Dublin No. 8 in the Georgia High School Football Daily’s composite rankings.

Peach County visits Westover in the 1-AAA opener for both teams. The Trojans rolled to a 55-36 win last year.

The undefeated Trojans are pass oriented this year behind Caiden Ivory, who’s good for nearly 160 yards a game passing, almost half to Zion Hudson, who is also a threat on the ground.
