Henley set to open PGA season at familiar and friendly Sony Open
There’s pretty much no such thing as a bad trip to Hawaii. Throw in a weekend of paid-for golf, and it’s even better.
For Russell Henley, add seven top-15 finishes in 13 tries at the Sony Open, and there’s icing atop the Hawaii cake.
The Stratford grad goes after a big chunk of the $9.1 million purse Thursday afternoon when he tees off at the Sony Open on the 7,044-yard Waialae Country Club course.
Henley tees off at 12:54 p.m. on No. 10, with Ben Griffin and Chris Gotterup, in his 310th PGA Tour event.
He has made 225 of 309 cuts en route to 58 top-10 finishes and five wins in his career, and is coming off a season in which he finished No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
He is a favorite to open the full-fledged season with a win, as he did in 2013, when he shot rounds of 63, 63, 67, and 63 to win the Sony with a 24-under 256, and take home a million bucks in his PGA debut.
Henley has added nearly $46 million in winnings since then.
Henley finished tied for 10th last year with a 12-under 268, a year after taking fourth.
