FPD baseball standout Johnson signs with Vandy
One of the best high school baseball prospects in Central Georgia history is set for college.
But where he’s in uniform in year is not so set.
FPD shortstop Keon Johnson signed last week with Vanderbilt, his commitment choice since November, a team regularly in the hunt for a College World Series trip.
Vanderbilt has won at least 45 games eight times since 2000, and reached the CWS final four times since 2014, winning it in 2019.
But Johnson is also a consensus top-50 prospect for the MLB draft this summer.
He was a top-10 high school prospect a few months ago by Baseball America and Perfect Game when he committed to Vanderbilt. He’s the state’s top high school prospect in some rankings.
Robinson batted .524 with 10 homers and 47 RBI for the Vikings last season, earning the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year award.
Perry’s Wright heading for the NFL Draft
After two quality years at Ole Miss and being part of an epic 2025 season, DaeQuan Wright is ready for the next step.
The Perry grad has declared his intention to head to the NFL Draft.
In two seasons at Mississippi after transferring from Virginia Tech, the 6-4, 255-pounder played in 28 games, and caught 66 passes for 1,028 yards and nine touchdowns.
He was on the Rebels’ leadership council, and earned a reputation for maturity and leadership.
Wright joins Lamar County’s CJ Allen (Georgia) and Putnam County’s Jalon Kilgore (South Carolina) as Central Georgian’s declaring for the draft, which is April 23-25 in Pittsburgh.
Henley rallies on back nine at Sony
Three straight birdies got Russell Henley going toward a quality round to open the 2026 season.
The Maconite is tied for 10th after one round at the Sony Open after shooting a 5-under 65.
He started the day on No. 10, and birdied three holes in a row early into the second nine, and birdied the final two holes of the day.
Henley is three shots back of co-leaders Nick Taylor and Kevin Roy. He tees off at 5:24 p.m. on Friday.
