Henley in large group off to good start
Russell Henley had a quality opening round of The American Express in California.
He wasn’t alone.
Henley is one of more than four dozen players who shot 6 under or better on the three courses used for the huge 156-player field.
The Stratford grad was 7-under on the LaQuinta Country Club Course, thanks to a bogey-free round. He started off with birdies on five of his first six holes, settled down, and added two more on the back nine.
He’s tied for 27th with seven birdies, and tied for first in sand saves and scrambling, but tied for 96th in putts per greens in regulation.
Henley tees off Friday at 12:14 p.m. on the Nicklaus Tournament Course, beginning on No. 10, with Akshay Bhatia.
