Henley racks up another bogey-free round
Half of The American Express is in the books, and Russell Henley has yet to record a bogey.
But he’s not alone in avoiding bogeys amid crowded group of contenders playing on three courses in LaQuinta, Cal.
Henley shot a 6-uder 66 on Friday to improve eight spots into aa tie for 12th at 13 under, joined by Patrick Cantlay and Ben Griffin, among others.
It’s the first time Henley has had consecutive bogey-free rounds since the RSM Classic in St. Simons at the end of the 2022-23 season, in November of 2023, when Henley put up only birdies and pars for the final three rounds en route to a 17-under tie for 13th.
Henley competed on the Nicklaus Tournament course, and birdied four on the first nine – he started on No. 10 again – and two on the second nine.
He improved on greens in regulation and putts per greens in regulation, and was able to avoid much trouble and recover from the few mild hiccups.
Henley sits four shots back of co-leaders Scottie Scheffler and Blades Brown, the latter of whom catapulted 50 spots after a scorching 60 on Friday.
He tees off Saturday at 11:41 a.m. on the Pete Dye Stadium Course, with Akshay Bhatia.
