GIAA tournament (In order of play)
Class 4A
Calvary Christian 5, FPD 2
The battle of the top two seeds went to the top seed. The Vikings took a 2-0 first-inning lead, the Knights tying it in the fourth and putting 3 across in the fifth. Both teams had 3 errors, and 4 of the game’s 7 runs were unearned. Gracyn Fuller went the distance, fanning 3 and walking 1 in the loss.
Tattnall 11, St. Anne-Pacelli 1
A 10-run fourth launched the Trojans to the 4.5-inning win, aided by 6 SAP errors. Bryton Tarver threw a no-hitter for Tattnall. SAP scored first on a hit batter, 2 stolen bases, and a sacrifice fly, and was shut down after that.
Tattnall 8, George Walton 3
The Trojans stayed alive to advance to an elimination game against FPD, with 3 runs in the third and fifth inning, surviving 4 errors. Reese Covington led Tattnall with 2 homers.
Tattnall 8, FPD 4
The Trojans weren’t tired from two earlier games Saturday and led from the start, boosted by a 4-run third and 3-run fourth. The second-seeded Vikings managed 2 two-out runs in the bottom of the seventh, but winning pitcher B. Tarver got a game-ending groundout to finish the rally and send Tattnall to the title round.
Tarver scattered 8 hits while fanning 3 and walking one in an efficient outing while the offense did something few offenses do: got to FPD standout Gracyn Fuller and Lyric Jones, who teamed for 7 strikeouts and 2 walks.
The Vikings allowed 5 runs or more only three times all season, twice to finalist Calvary Christian (15 and 5) and once to finalist Tattnall (on Friday). FPD has been held to 5 runs or less 7 times, and went 3-4 (three times to Strong Rock and twice to Calvary).
The Trojans beat George Walton 9-7 for the 2024 state title, Tattnall beating FPD 16-1 in the second game in Columbus.
The fourth-seeded Trojans take on top seed Calvary Christian at 6 p.m. in the final.
Class 3A
Terrell 8, Westfield 7
Terrell followed Westfield’s 6-run bottom of the sixth with 3 in the top of the seventh to send the Hornets to a rare spot: the loser’s bracket. Westfield’s last tournament loss was 13-4 in 2024, the Hornets bouncing back for a 26-18 win to take the state title.
John Milledge 9, Heritage 0, 5 inn.
The Trojans took control with a 7-run second, on two doubles, a dropped third strike, a sac bunt, and single, double, and triple.
John Milledge 8, Deerfield-Windsor 0, 4.5 inn.
Macie Johnson went 3 for 3 and Payton Pounds fanned 5 in 3 innings with no walks. Adyson Stalnaker finishing the 3-hitter.
John Milledge 3, Westfield 2
A team doesn’t win nine straight state championships by flinching, so Westfield no doubt just took a deep collective breath after Adyson Stalnaker’s two-out double to right brought in two runs in the top of the seventh and put John Milledge up in the elimination game.
That calm confidence only grew with a walk, single, and fielder’s choice to start the bottom of the seventh loaded the bases with no outs.
But a grounder back to the pitcher turned into a 1-2-3 double play, getting the lead runner at the plate. A walk followed, but starting pitcher Payton Pounds got an 0-2 grounder to first baseman Laila Pounds and that confidence turned to disbelief and shock with Westfield’s season not ending in the final game.
The last time that happened was 2016. And more than once along the way did Westfield break John Milledge’s heart. The Trojan’s last title came in 2008-09.
Westfield broke the scoreless pitchers battle with 2 runs in the sixth only for the lead to evaporate soon enough.
Macie Johnson led the 6-hit JMA attack with 2 hits. Pounds held Westfield to 3 hits, and survived 5 walks against 1 strikeout.
John Milledge takes on Terrell at 4 p.m. in the final.
