Alumni Update

Georgia wasn’t going repeat the same mistake with ‘really talented’ transfer WR Isiah Canion

Jones County’s Finney suffered multiple injuries in UFC bout

Torrez Finney had barely worked up a sweat in his UFC 325 match against Jakob Malkoun when the beginning of the end appeared.

Before a minute had elapsed, Finney suffered an ACL injury while also tearing both meniscus in his knee.

He posted an update on social media Thursday morning, on the diagnosis and then surgery at OrthoGeorgia in Macon.

Finney struggled in his second full-fledged UFC even and lost a unanimous decision to Malkhoun, competing in his home country of Australia. Finney dropped to 11-1 as a pro.

Finney was a football and wrestling star at Jones County who played football at Chattanooga while eventually competing in wrestling a little for the Mocs.

Pursuit of suspect interrupts Lamar County sports briefly

Lamar County’s events Wednesday were interrupted by a law enforcement situation.

The system posted an update Wednesday:

“For a brief period after school today, the Barnesville Police Department and the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office pursued an individual into the wooded area behind the Barnesville Ingles grocery store. The individual was quickly apprehended without incident.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the Lamar County High School Resource Officer temporarily relocated student-athletes from the tennis courts and baseball fields. All student-athletes have since returned to normal activities, and operations have resumed as usual.”

Henley off to good start at Pebble Beach

It took four holes before Russell Henley’s first birdie of the day, but it was clearly early that Henley was on his game in the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The Maconite shot a 6-under 66 to settle into a tie for 11th with seven others, including Jordan Spieth, Sepp Straka, Rickie Fowler, and Patrick Cantlay.

He barely missed an ace on No. 5, his fifth birdie. He birdied another par-3 two holes later, part of his second run of three straight birdies.

Henley’s lone bogey came on the 11th hole, the 381-yard par 4 No. 1. He was just off on a 12-foot par putt.

He ranks in the top 20 in shots gained putting ad total, driving accuracy, greens in regulation, and sand saves.

The Stratford grad opened last year’s event with a 64 and contended, finishing tied for fifth after a third-round 71 slowed his contention.

He tees off Friday at 1:16 p.m. with Maverick McNealy on No. 1.
