Russell Henley is in his normal spot before a major:
A contender, and somewhat under the radar.
There are a variety of topics and headliners above Henley as he’s set for his 10th Masters on Thursday.
The Macon native tees off at 10:19 a.m. with Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa at the 90th edition of the tournament.
He doesn’t have quite the momentum of last year, having missed the cut last week at the Valero Texas Open.
But he finished tied for 13th in the Players Championship after tying for sixth at the Arnold Palmer. Conversely, he’s already missed two cuts in seven events, when it took 11 tournaments to reach that a year ago.
Henley was steady if not boring in the Texas Open, with a two-round 1-under 143.
Getting some distance out of the box will be a key, as usual, for one of the game’s most accurate hitters. He has improved on par 5s in recent years, but Augusta toys with him.
His average first-round score is 72.7, with four straight 73s from 2018-2024. In 2023, he rebounded well and finished tied for fourth.
Henley, who will turn 37 on Sunday, is No. 29 in the FedEx Cup rankings and 12th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
