An interesting first day for Henley in Masters
Seven pars, six bogeys, and five birdies made for a head-scratching first round at the Masters for Russell Henley.
Ending the day with two bogeys dropped Henley to a 1-over 73 and into a tie for 33rd in his 10th visit to Augusta.
Mere pars on the final two holes would’ve had Henley in the top 10. As it is, he’s six shots back of co-leaders Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns.
And on those two bogeys, Henley uncharacteristically missed par putts of six feet - to blow a nice sand save chance – and five feet – missing left by a few inches.
He did have birdies on all four par 5 holes, and bogeyed three par 4s.
Henley – who was above average in fairways hit, average in putting, and a hair blow average in greens in regulation - is back at it with Hideki Matsuyama (even, tied for 17th) and Collin Morikawa (2 over, tied for 40th) at 1:32 p.m. Friday.
It’s Henley’s fifth opening-round 73 in 10 tries in Augusta. Overall, four second rounds have been better than the first in nine Masters, including last year’s 9-shot improvement.
