Russell Henley’s contention at the U.S. Open took a hit on Friday’s second round, dropping 29 spots and putting him together with Dustin Johnson and Ryan Fox, who fell 29 spots each.
Meanwhile, Joaquein Niemann, jumped a whopping 93 spots into that tie for 46th.
Henley will try to stabilize his game during Saturday’s third round on a course and with weather making things interesting.
Henley finished off a frisky first round – four birdies, two bogeys, and a double bogey – with two pars for an even 70 and tied for 16th.
The frisky continued in the second round, with three bogeys and two birdies on the front nine.
Henley’s play didn’t necessarily improve, but his standing did, during a second round that dropped him temporarily to 44th after a 1-over front nine
He tightened up after a bogey on No. 2 – he began the day teeing off on No. 10 – with four pars and a bogey.
That tightening didn’t last, and he had a double bogey on his next-to-last hole of the day for a 3-over round of more inconsistency.
That put him in a tie for 46th. He’s in good company with Jordan Spieth and Patrick Rodgers, and ahead of top-50 players Bud Cauley, Hideki Matsuyama, Robert MacIntrye, Chris Gotterup, and Jacob Bridgeman.
The cut line ended up as 4 over, sending home Bryson DeChambeau, Viktor Hovland, Rickie Fowler, Si Woo Kim, and Sepp Straka, among others.
Henley, who tees off at 11:06 a.m., is 10 sho back of leader Wyndham Clark, who maintained his lead despite losing five shots from Thursday’s sizzling first round.
