A day of implosion for Henley
The good news is that Russell Henley won’t have to wait long to flush a wretched round from memory.
The bad news is that he still has a round left.
The Stratford grad had an epic day Saturday at the U.S. Open, and the only good thing about it was that things could’ve been worse.
Barely.
Henley staggered through a 10-over round and an 80 to drop near the bottom of the 72 players left at Shinnecock Hills.
He sits in a tie for 68th at 13 over, with only three players below him entering the final round.
After two decent rounds that kept him in the hunt for some decent money, Henley’s final 12 holes of the day were a general disaster.
Improbably, one of the game’s top irons and short players managed to go 18 holes without a single birdie. He had seven bogeys, and numbing triple-bogey on No. 10, which he had a par and bogey in the first two rounds.
Henley's last round of 18 holes that touched 80? He might not remember it, the second round of The Open Championship in 2018.
If Henley just shoots a mere even par on Sunday and finishes at 13 over, that'll be his worst four-round score since, well, a month before that 80, when he was 12 over at the U.S. Open.
Henley was 10 over for the 2025 PGA Championship in missing the cut, 9 over for the same tournament in 2021, as well as 9 over at Wells Fargo two weeks earlier.
He’s in the field for the Travelers Championship in Connecticut, where he finished tied for second last year with a 14-under weekend. Henley came in after a tie for 10th at the U.S. Open.
