Houston County’s Harrelson takes top A-Sun pitcher honors to South Carolina
Former Houston County softball standout is stepping up to a bigger stage.
Fresh off winning the Atlantic Sun’s Pitcher of the Year honor, the sophomore is transferring to South Carolina (7-17 last season).
Harrelson had a 2.26 ERA over 186 innings in 2026 and led the ASUN in innings pitched (186.0), strikeouts (119), batters struck out looking (45), total wins (22), opposing batting average (.202) and was second in overall ERA (2.26).
In ASUN play, Harrelson was first in opposing batting average, innings pitched, batters struck out, batters struck out looking, wins and second in ERA.
It was one of the more dominant seasons in Jacksonville history.
She departs second on the Jacksonville all-time wins list with 22.
Henley rebounds with decent final round
There was good news for Russell Henley at the end of a rough weekend.
It didn’t get worse, and he didn’t finish last.
Henley got nine strokes back on Sunday at the U.S. Open while still languishing near the bottom and ended up finishing tied for 65th out of 72 players.
His 14-over 294 put him with Hideki Matsuyama and Andrew Putnam. It was his worst finish since tying for 62nd in the 2022 Open Championship.
Sunday didn’t start out so well, with two bogeys in the first six holes. Saturday, he had two in the first seven.
But he avoided anything worse, as opposed to Saturday’s rare triple bogey. And he wasn’t shut out of birdies, as he was on Saturday.
He’ll carry some positive vibes from New York up the road to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship, where he tied for second last year.
Honor Roll
Brentwood wins major GISA/GIAA honor
Brentwood’s most successful year of athletics in school history didn’t go unnoticed by outsiders.
The school earned the 2025-26 GISA Class AA Michael Drake Award, which honors athletic success and excellence for the year in each classification.
From Brentwood’s release: “Schools accumulate points based on their performance in state competition, with the highest point totals awarded for state championships, followed by state runner-up finishes and other postseason accomplishments.”
Brentwood earned its sixth Drake award after state titles in football, boys and girls basketball, and boys and girls track and field. The Gators finished second in state in softball and girls’ tennis, with Final Four trips in golf and boys tennis.
In addition to the team successes leading to the award, Brentwood had GIAA players of the year Baylor Cobb in football, Tristan Robinson in boys basketball, Cadence English in girls basketball, and Moriah Hitchcock in girls track.
Brentwood’s Friday release with more details about team and individual accomplishments is here.
The GIAA has yet to post anything on the award as of Sunday night.
