Henley carries momentum into the Memorial
The last time Russell Henley took a PGA Tour win into a tournament a week later, he tied for 30th at The Players Championship.
Henley won’t have quite as much weight on his shoulders this time.
The Maconite and Columbus resident will still have some pressure on him after winning last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge in a playoff.
He’ll try to keep it going at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio.
“I've had some good tournaments this year,” he said after winning at Schwab. “I've also had a few that I've been frustrated with. Like I said earlier, I feel like mentally I've kind of let my frustrations get the best of me this year.”
The battles are weekly.
“I feel like mentally, I can't take one shot off, I can't take a practice day off,” he said Sunday. “I need to be locked in every part of my game and just, it just has to be a hundred percent every day. The older I've gotten, the more I realize how much work it takes, how hard it is.
“The longer I play the more bad shots I hit, too, so you kind of have those in the back of your mind too. I mean, like, ‘Man, I don't want to do that again.’”
Henley likes the tournament a bit. He’s made six cuts in nine tries, and has three top-20 finishes, including a tie for fifth last year despite a rough 74 in the first round.
And he’s certainly a favorite, coming off a final round during which he escaped a poor start with a clutch finish.
From Athlon Sports: “Henley just showed everyone at Colonial what happens when his irons wake up and choose violence. After gaining more than eight strokes on approach in his win, he heads to another course that rewards precision over power. That’s great news for a guy who leads the TOUR in fairways hit and rarely makes a mess of a scorecard.
“Muirfield Village can be brutal, but Henley’s accuracy, scrambling and bogey avoidance are basically the perfect survival kit.”
From CBS Sports/Sports Line: “He placed fifth at this tournament in 2025 as his unparalleled precision off the tee makes him a great fit for this course.
“Muirfield is the fourth-longest course on the PGA Tour schedule, and Henley leads the tour in driving accuracy percentage. Thus, you can always count on Henley to put himself in a great second-shot position on the long fairways Muirfield offers.”
