Henley makes some progress at Royal Birkdale
Russell Henley couldn’t avoid the bogeys, but he grew more familiar with birdies.
Henley had double the birdies to bogeys to rise up the leaderboard a bit after three rounds at the British Open.
His 2-under 68 on Saturday lifted him into a tie for 38th with almost another dozen players, all nine back of leader Sam Burns.
“I feel like when the weather is like this, I put extra pressure on myself to make birdies, so it just feels like I'm fighting from way behind as it is,” Henley told reporters. “So it's just … I feel good about it. I feel like my game is there.
“I've just been slightly off this week, whether it's missing the fairway by a yard or two or not holing a putt I needed to.”
Henley now has nine birdies after three rounds, to eight bogeys.
“I feel like there's a lot of birdies to be made out there with the wind down, so I could be back in 60-something place by the end of the day,” he said. “But yeah, I feel like I played well.”
He tees off at 6:10 a.m. on Sunday.
