Wilmington 8, Macon 7, 12 inn.
Macon had a great start to the second game of the Coastal Plain championship series second game, but wretched defense at the end allowed Wilmington to win it 8-7 Sunday in 12 innings.
The championship is Monday at 7 p.m. in Wilmington.
Owen Mandler reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the 12th, and took off for second on a delayed steal. He got tangled up with second baseman Carson Zagryn as the throw bounced into short left field.
While Mandler and Zagryn stood at second, their part of the play seemingly over, shortstop Stephen Jordan inexplicably just heaved the ball to parts unknown, toward the first-base dugout where allowing Mandler to reach third.
He stopped, but Macon first baseman Aiden Zagryn inexplicably threw to the plate where there was no play. Mandler stood on third and watched the throw sail into the dugout, allowing him to jog in with the winning run.
The play befuddled the official scorer on Iscore, who didn’t have the details correct.
The Sharks celebrated as Macon manager Jesse Litch discussed the play with umpires, perhaps inquiring if there was interference at second and if the play had been called dead at some point.
The umpires ruled that the play stood.
Carson Zagyrn had 3 hits, while Max Prozny and Hayden Testerman drove in 2 runs each for Macon.
