Henley eyes steadier play at BMW
The word “unknown” has appeared a bit lately in descriptions off Russell henley’s game.
That’s the word used by the PGA Tour’s online hole tracker when a shot leaves a specific hole’s premises.
For the most accurate drive on the tour, that’s unexpected.
But Henley has grinded past those errors and avoided exacerbating issues, and carries that toughness into the second round of the tour’s playoff, in the BMW Championship in St. Louis.
Henley tees off in the penultimate pairing, at 2:44 p.m. with Jacob Bridgeman.
Henley has had good trips to the BMW the last three years, finishing tied for eighth, 22nd, and 15th.
He was in the hunt through three rounds last year, but a fourth-round stumble and a 73 dropped him out of contention. Henley entered Sunday tied for 11th after a round similar to some of his recent play: unpredictable.
Last year, it was at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. This year, Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis.
It’s been awhile since Henley played Bellrive in the 2017-18 PGA Championship, finishing 50th at 2 under.
The BMW is the successor of the Western Open, starting in 2007.
Henley is sixth in the Official World Golf Rankings and 14th in the FedExCup. He’s assured a spot in next week’s Tour Championship in Atlanta.
The Macon native tied for second in the PGA’s final playoff tournament, at East Lake in Atlanta.
