Henley officially earns spot again on Presidents Cup team
Two years and a week ago around this time, there was suspense, and then great joy. A year ago, something similar.
Now? Eh, Russell Henley is a top-10 golfer, and is an automatic qualifier for the Presidents Cup team.

Ho hum.
The 2026 team was announced on Monday, Henley ranking fifth in the points system used to determine the automatic qualifiers and set up the speculation for the at-large picks.
Two years ago, Henley was part of that speculation after the FedExCup playoff tournaments, but it really wasn’t much of a surprise on Sept. 3, 2024 when Jim Furyk added him as a captain’s pick for his first Presidents Cup appointment.
The announcement came two days after Henley’s rousing finish to the Tour Championship, when he buried a 36-yard eagle putt on No. 18 for a course-record 62.
A year later, Henley earned another milestone when he qualified for his first Ryder Cup.
This go ‘round, Henley has 6,009 points, way behind No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, and a good chunk ahead of No. 6, Collin Morikawa with 5,614.
He returns to the team along with Morikawa, Scheffler, Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, and Sam Burns.
Henley is sixth in the Official World Golf ranking, and 14th in the FedExCup rankings. He and 29 others are back in action just up the road in the Tour Championship at East Lake.
This is the third straight year that Henley has made the U.S. team in the elite team action.
The captain’s picks will be announced on Tuesday.
The Presidents Cup is Sept. 24-27 at Medinah Country Club Course No. 3 in Medinah, Illinois, about 25 miles west of Chicago.
It has hosted three U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, the 2012 Ryder Cup and 2019 BMW Championship. Henley didn’t compete in that BMW, so this is his debut on the 7,657-ard par-72 private course that opened in 1928.
First things first, though, and that’s the Tour Championship, where Henley has finished tied for second and tied for fourth in his last two trips, and has finished no worse than a tie for 14th in five tries.
Last year’s tie for second earned him a whopping $4.4 million.
