Henley breaks par streak, jumps into contention
For the first time in his career, Russell Henley had only pars for a whole round.
He broke that streak early on Friday with a birdie, following two holes later with a bogey.
But Henley turned in a Henley-like second round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta with a 5-under 65 to jump from a tie for last – granted, only 29 players in the field – into a tie for 15th.
He and four others are only five shots behind co-leaders Ryan Gerard and Viktor Hovland.
A sure sign of Henley’s normal game: he was tied for first after two rounds in driving accuracy, and had the best day on Friday when he missed only one fairway. He was also in the top five in shots gained putting and off the tee, and total
The surprising stat of the first two rounds for Henley? He has the sixth-longest drive so far at 362 yards, notable for the player who ranks 179th in longest drives with a 375-yarder in the U.S. Open.
He tees off at 1:25 p.m. Saturday with Jacob Bridgeman.
Mercer ready for spotlight, opener, and Taylor’s debut
GMC JC set to break in new stadium upgrades
After a rough road trip to Tyler Junior College that ended in a 30-20 loss, GMC JC is more ready than usual to be at home.
Saturday’s visit by Trinity Valley Community College will be a big one, as it’s the first one at a rejuvenated Davenport Field.
The school held a ribbon-cutting a few weeks ago to show off nearly $2 million in renovations: a new turf field, lighting, and a new LED scoreboard to go along with upgrades throughout.
